Russianhackingsite.biz - Why????

Is this a Russian website?

No.

Is this a hacking website?

No.

Is this a website?

...Yes.

Is this a business?

Not really.

Why does this exist??

Russianhackingsite.biz was something I bought on a lark after being amused that the name wasn't already owned by anybody. I've worked in customer-facing technical support in one form or another for over 7 years, and I've seen a lot of scam sites tricking people into calling a phone number or downloading malicious software with cheap scare-tactics like the ones you can see here.

Whenever explaining what was happening to people (and how there was actually nothing wrong with their actual computer) I would often try to return to the "scene of the crime" to demonstrate some of the signs and how to escape from the page. Invariably, the scammer would have closed up shop by then, or the internet filters where I was working blocked it outright. This kind of ruined any ability to teach by example.

Russianhackingsite.biz is intended to be a place to reliably demonstrate these tactics, while being able to feel confident that the site is fundamentally "safe," and even includes instructions for how to get out of it.

Does anyone explain these scam sites better?

Yes! I'm a fan of the PSA that MalwareBytes put together on the subject

Why is it called Russianhackingsite?

It's kind of a running joke among IT support people, and I thought it was funny.

Why .biz?

I thought it was funnier than .com

Who ARE you?

My name is Mike Hanley. As stated above, I work in IT Support. I am also an independent filmmaker.

Hey, didn't you used to have Google AdSense ads on this page?

I did! I figured that if other tech support people find this useful I might as well try to make back some of the $13 I spent on this domain name. But in the post-GDPR world, the long-shot pittance that might gain me isn't worth the gymnastics that would be required to fit appropriate consent and disclosures into the... unique format of Russianhackingsite.biz.

I'm keeping the Google Analytics, but just using the anonymized bare-bones version.
